Memorial Day is Monday and there will be events in both Portales and Clovis that day to commemorate the day and honor those who have given their lives in service to this country. If you live in Clovis, the American Legion would welcome your help in placing flags on graves at Clovis cemeteries starting at 7 a.m. Monday. Call 763-5392 if you want to know more. The Clovis VFW hosts a Memorial Day service at 10 a.m. at Lawn Haven Memorial Cemetery. In Portales, the United Daughters of the Confederacy and Sons of the Confederacy will host a service at 9 a.m. at the Portales Cemetery, and at 10:30 a.m. the American Legion will host its 64th celebration of Memorial Day, also at the Cemetery. These are all good events to remind us and our children about what Memorial Day really means.

Notes from Mom's Night Out
Those of us that attended the Mom’s Night Out Curriculum Review thought it would be nice to send out the notes of what we discussed. Attached are the handouts addressing different learning and teaching styles. We had a great discussion about utilizing curriculum and approaches that couple our teaching styles and our kids’ learning styles. Here are some thoughts/ideas that the ladies had that evening:
- The website for highly distractable children and ditties is www.sizzlebop.com (writer of what looks like a neat book “The Big WHAT NOW Book of Learning Styles”)
- Also, the grammar & phonics website curriculum I was talking about is Bridge to Latin Road and Phonics Road which can be found at www.thelatinroad.com
- Homeschool Rundown (for a Kindergartner and a 3 year old)
- Workbox System - for organization and smoothly running school day. Great for my 3 year old. http://www.workboxsystem.com/ (Jami has the book you can borrow)
- Five in a Row - Literature based unit-study approach for early education based on outstanding children's literature covering Social Studies, Language, Art, Applied Math, and Science in a way that causes children to fall in love with learning. http://www.fiarhq.com/
- Math U See - http://www.mathusee.com
- Kumon, My book of Numbers - http://www.kumonbooks.com/
- Bob Books Series - phonics books. Found mine at Costco (cheaper and bigger box of books there) or find at http://www.bobbooks.com/
- New American Cursive Handwriting - Recommends starting cursive at a early age http://www.newamericancursive.
com / - Kumon, My First book of Tracing - http://www.kumonbooks.com/
- Kimon, My First book of Cutting - http://www.kumonbooks.com/
- Kids FitDeck - Kids FitDeck is on Amazon for $15 or an basic adult FitDeck is free at the HAWC.
- Favorite FREE Websites:

- The reminder that homeschooling is an extension of our motherhood not separate.
- Montessori projects for younger hands on fun/learning while teaching others. Setting up an area and kits to do so.
- Using curriculum as a framework and building from it with what your child likes to do to apply.
- The reminder to not feel like you have to use one curriculum for all your kids. Be flexible, be fun, be creative.
- The reminder to meet our kids where their needs are where we can.
- Remember that cooking something, watching the process of foundation being poured next door, writing a report on a History Channel documentary, and theatre rehearsing are all learning experiences in “curriculum” that count!
- Letting older kids pace themselves in their work, not being so structured in our day’s scheduling.
- Here’s a good website to review curriculum: http://www.

Activities for May, June, July, & August

Well it’s almost May and the end of the school year is right around the corner. Is anyone else having trouble focusing with spring fever? On pretty (and not windy) days we just want to be outside!! I sincerely hope that your school year has been enriching and full of growth. We have a couple of things going on this month and several things going on in the area that I wanted you to know about. Please feel free, as always, to pass this info on to other families that you know of that would benefit from the information or are interested in what our group is doing. Also, if you hear of things around base or town that you think others would be interested in please email me and I will forward on to the group. Summer is near and we all want to know of the happenings in Clovis/Portales. I also have attached a copy (in two different formats) of our most current roster. There are some blanks as I need more info on kids’ names and current ages as well as phone numbers and areas of residence from a few to help us with connectivity over the summer. I’ll bring a hard copy to our potluck for you to update if you would like to share. I hope we can stay in contact over the summer with at least one activity!! It’s been a great year and I value the friendships, encouragement, advice, and examples that have been shared this school year! I hope to see you all soon…
- Dairy Farm Tour Rescheduled: TBD

Hopefully we’ll have time to play a game and just hang out together! Our host is Belinda.(An area wide used curriculum/book sale will take place in June- see below- so we won’t focus on a swap/sell of items.)
- End of the Year Family Potluck: Sunday, May 23 at 3-6pm. Bring your husband, children and something edible to share as we celebrate another completed school year and the group friendships that we are blessed with. Our host family is Barbara's Family. Please email Barbara with what you would like to bring so we can cover all of our basis. We need main dishes, sides, desserts, drinks and serving items. Her email is biagmir at yahoo dot com

Topics like organization, home management, military adjustments, younger siblings, etc… Please join us for a time of Q and A’s as we share our experiences!

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8 (with a special morning service honoring mothers on Sunday May, 9). For the 2 evenings we will meet in the Chapel’s Fellowship Hall from 7-9 pm to be encouraged. I have attached a document with all the details. There will be much to benefit from and there will be door prizes, dessert and beverages, and did I already mention encouragement J! Special activities will be available for children, but space is limited. Email cannon pwoc at gmail dot com with names and ages of children. You will receive a confirmation email to ensure space is available for your children. Please pass on the word to anyone you think would want to attend!
- The Chapel’s PWOC is also working on starting a Faith and Fitness Class this summer, day and time to be determined. You can join them to grow in physical and spiritual strength. There will be an instructor teaching fun things like pilates, zumba, and kickboxing. A correlating children’s program will be offered as well!! They are giving away free DVDs of the program to any school in America that requests one, including home-schools. All you have to do is fill out the request form by July 1, and they will ship it to you in August (shipping is free as well). I thought that this would be really helpful for your American History curriculum next fall. Feel free to pass it on to any other homeschoolers that you might know. Here is the link to the request form:
